see folks this is what dealers ( some i might add , not all don't say )

John dealers are just that dealers their first aim is to sell you a detector and like you point out a few days ago first time buyers should when possible buy from a local dealer that will help you along step by step. The big dealers that do most of their business by mail order are great for Me GD BA etc because we know what we want when we buy a new detector but for a first time buyer unless you can go to the store look for a local dealer that will let you try several different machines pointing out the good  and BAD in them.
Once more there is no best detector and without a good operator with good research and a lot of common sense most people are going to quit in a short time anyway. So many people today want instant gratification they see me come out of the water with a hand full of rings and think hey I can do that they don't consider that I have been at this 40 years I know my tools I can read the water and know were to hunt I watch the sand and know when is uncovered places down to the packed shell were the old stuff is.  Now if I go up to Homefire or BA territory I would be lost they know how to read their creeks and desert I would have to learn that before I could do any good there.
Now I am way off topic. Read all the info you can on any detector you are considering ask all the questions before you buy only buy from a dealer you trust and that has been helpful.

Its winter and Im bored. Seldom is right about buying a new machine and then selling it. I have a purpose for my next two machines. Im sure they will perform as well as I take the time to learn them. My Bounty Hunter has reached its limits, and cant take me any further. But it kicks butt on the clad.

Well thats how you pay for you new machines , the little machines are like steping stones and each is another step til you start to know what Seldom,GD and BA knows and even then it don't stop coz you start to build things and thats when all the brain scratchin starts , I've got a friend who just bought a whites Eagle II sl 90 and it's about one of the most adjustable machines that were made
he paid 190$$$ for it and it is in fantastic condition he's the only one i know over here that can drive the thing and it's deep but so useable, he sold his sovereign gt, his mxt and others but with him it's the knowledge he craves

My favourite detector is the one that works for the type of area you are in - for example when gold detecting I like one that is easy to ground balance like my gold bug 2 (old style) - I am in Texas for the winter and South Padre Island is fifth saltiest place in the world - so to get away from interference from the salt I use my garrett Sea Hunter - a pi machine that does not see the mineralization of the salt - my 2500 even with the salt elimination mode has some small difficulty --Bob T

The machine is easy to use but heavy out of the water - some may have to use a strap to get some weight off their arm - it is great in the water - found some gold with it and any machine that finds gold is one of my favs - the batteries last quite a while - I don't know how long as I change them long before they die - I believe that if I am going to spend the time and money for gas that I am going to spend a little more and keep fresh batteries in every second time I go out - they are cheap at Home Depot or Lowes - uses 8 c's and I can use them in flashlights or something else - I also use a Fisher 1280 in the water - the batteries last quite a while in that one too - I like both the detectors - the depth on the Sea Hunter may be a little better as I dig some targets at 10 to 18 inches on the beach -- good hunting -- Bob T.

Fisher Gold Bug SE, Tracker IV

My FAVORITE is my GoldBug, but strange enough, like GD, its not the first one I reach for.  My every day MD is the Bounty Hunter tracker IV and the one I've used the most because I don't want to get the goldbug dirty yet.
