Hi Everybody ! Happy New Year to all !
Hope this New Year will be longer than the old one  - it went past like one day !
I spend my New Year in Ballito ( close to Durban for this guys from CT ! ) Beaches were to busy with all those partying and drinking people to explore ! Only managed to play a bit this morning at 6 am on one beach  - results are below -no gold or diamonds but still enjoyable ! I only arrived home now ,so still didnt clean the coins , not sure what are this big ,old ones ?
Looks like our coins dont take salty condition wery well , most of them are badly " rotten "
Hi Craig ! Welcome to our group !

Hi Silki,
Happy New Year to you also  Great sounds like you had fun on the beach? Those big copper coins look like British old pennies??? SA currency is junk money these days, not like the old stuff  Funny
I also went out detecting, you can look at my movie on the website at

Sounds good , Pgill ! We should all have our contact numbers - we did some registration , remember ? Of course , I will joint U ! Is yours MD fixed ?
It is strange , how deep are this new coins "eaten " , one of the old ones is from 1953 and looks still better than new 5 Rand ! This old coins is the promising sign , it means that not much if at all exploration was done there ! All this finds came from less than 100 m of sand ! But than sun became to strong to walk around ! New lesson : one has to start or very early or late afternoon  with some extra light !

Hi Silki,

I do have the numbers, I must send them out to you all.... all 3 of them  Clapp

Yeah maybe this will be our chance to meet each other, I like the sound of that  Great

The old SA coins don't just rot away like our new stuff.... which is a blessing for now, as we want the older coins more than the new.... But in 10 - 20 years time when I am on pension, then I will want the new coinage...  No no! Umm this coinage is going to be a curse to us guys in years to come..... It will smack us straight on the chin  Violent

My detector will go to Durban on the 10th Jan when the factory opens again... so will get it by the end of Jan, I hope.....  Detecting

Go Up Go Down

Hello Well I have spend most of the day reading the thread, and found it very interesting. Last xmas I received a "toy" MD and used it a little bit. I am living in Mossel Bay, and will mostly do beach combing. I had two requests for searching a ring and a set of car keys, but could not find anything but I must say that the ring request was "old", and somebody else also searched for it with a MD. The car keyes request was a day old, but I doubt whether a bunch of keys will not be visible in the sand.

I any case,  I am looking for a new MD, and wanted to ask your advice for a new MD. I have been looking at the Garrett Ace 250 and the Fisher F2. What would you guys recommend if I want to use it mainly on the beach, maybe I will get to the "gold trail" later.

A question that I've wondering about. If you recover a ring on the beach, is it yours to keep and convert to cash? Handing it in at the authorities it will be just as good to throw it back in the sea. What does the law say?

Hi flamtech

Firstly let me welcome you to thnting.com

Grin Grin You don't want my advice but the law states that you should hand it in and after three months if it was not "claimed"(stolen) then it's your or so I was told and as for buying a detector you should get hold of Viking he has an agency for them here in SA.

Regards Xavier PS you should introduce your self on the new members board.

Hi Flamtech ! Welcome ! I am also relatively new to the hobby , but I did quiet lot of research and reading on the subject . Beaches , especially , in SA are not very demanding on modern MD as long as it is not one of this Chinese rubbish ! If U are planning to go into the water then U should from the start think about one of this waterproof , like CZ 21, but again they are pricey ! Garret and Fisher they are very good all - rounders as long as U dont expose them to the splashes of see water - it is a killer for electronics ! In SA , maybe with exception , of some areas in Cape , there are no beaches with beautiful flat water like in the Florida , Europe or Caribbeans ! We are having heavy waves and tides , and shallow areas were people playing and wave-jumping  , are impossible for diving or even walking with MD ! I was 4 days in the Ballito and tried myself - no chance ! But beaches itself , especially , after busy holiday are still good shot ! Than - good luck and keep posting ! Silki .
