I agree with Drdetector. From all stories I have seen on TV and papers, if the item is not claimed by the real owners" who can discribe it" then it goes back to you. I would go there and get it back or contact another law enforcment like the state trooper. Tell him what happened. If you did not get the guys badge number, you need to get it.

If you turn it into the Police...Make sure you get a reciept with full discription on it..take a photo if you can also.
If an item is unclaimed most times you will get it back.
On an othetr forum I have heard a few stories of people turning in items to the Police..then when they checked up on the items..they had been "thrown away" or lost ect...always get a reciept.

Dean

reciepts dont mean nothin to cops..they live in their own bubble.if its a valuable item, almost for sure will be misplaced/lost/ shipped somewhere.. Kiss

You got ripped off, that cop just conned you, around here just put an ad in the paper, and have them describe item, our local city? and county cops around here are too lazy to even leave the donut shop to con anyone, only time they can confiscate anything is when used in a crime, or stolen and they need paperwork to prove it, other than that it's yours=BOOG's Law

Well if you have a reciept, you can always take it to court.

Wow....police are very disliked :Smiley.  I am a police officer and I work midnights in Chicago, so I don't think I will hear anything new!  But here goes on your ring.  First there is a such thing as a Lost/found property report.
Second can you find out what happened to the item?>  Sure not sure if you live in a hick town or what but in Chicago we have something called an Inventory tracking system!  Everything taken in must be inventoried!

What does this mean??>>>It means that there should be an INVENTORY NUMBER!!!
TRY TO FIND OUT! Unfortunately...I agree with the other posters who said you just should have kept it.  I believe we earn what we dig!  Hopefully if your police department said you could have it back they give it to you.  Sorry I don't think that would happen in Chicago seeing you turned it in!! Shocked  Well good luck, hey and everyone remember being a police officer is like any other job there are GOOD officers also! Wink  DFX-Gregg

Hey Gregg, I have no problem with Police..they have a tough job and I couldn't do it myself..I drove ambulances for a few years in Toronto when I got out of the Army..that was hard enough!!

I have heard of problems with items turned in, in both the US and the UK..in many cases they seem to disappear..and some of the reasons the finders are told just don't add up.

I think that in a case or two that I have heard of...someone at the Station  just liked the item.

There are good and bad in every walk of life...with Police you seem to hear the few Bad problems..and very few of the good that is done.
