I agree Seldom. Palmer found an extrodianary amount of items with initials and monograms in my opinion.

I especially like the skull and crossbones carved on the one item, nothing like advertising is there? Perhaps a jolly roger tattoo on your arm? I'm no pirate... sure...

Anyway I still think they would be fun, like having an autographed copy of Treasure Island.  But alas I be far to cheap fer that matey!  Grin

Yea I got a problem with that myself, don't think the S&C were used as much as we would like to believe. Palmer was a very good faker and con man I am thinking I will spend sometime researching him maybe can get a handle on what he was up to.

Skull & Crossbones? In todays times we associate it with pirates, sure, but it also holds a hint off cheesyness to it if that makes sense. When it comes to be on any supposed map

If you see a supposed pirate map and see the skull and crossbones on it, your alarm bells would immediately think why? why advertise your a pirate?

What if its put on a level with the likes of say, doctors, surgeons, lawyers. They all hang there certificates up on the wall. Is that a requirement or a personal pride achievement  sign? Same for various military outfits who wear their emblem with pride etc,

Would it be any different for pirates who were proud of being pirates to etch skull and cross bones onto items? Does that mentality fit in with kidds character?
Only asking because it could be looked at a differently this way.

However if it is proven to be all fake then that blows that notion.

Thats not what I am saying wuzneme what I mean is that S&C was not very popular in Kidds time Yes the Jolly Rogers was in use but the one carved on the frame is a 19th century verson

I think it would be akin to a drug dealer hanging up a shingle to advertise pharmaceuticals.   Wink

Pride is one thing but having your feet nailed to the deck and your entrails pulled out is not something one would take lightly. (reputedly one of the penalties fr pirates  in the south china seas).

Kidd valued his reputation enough to go to clear his name, so I can't see him blazoning things with pirate regalia. He thought he was legal in his capture of the QM.

Just my opinion I could be wrong, but too many things don't seem to add up.

A plain old skull and crossbones is pretty generic. Look at all the variations of the jolly roger that were used. I would think Kidd would want his own style since he wanted his name on everything. Or is it that people today seeing it immediately associate it with pirates and with a WK it becomes a relic? Perhaps some are real and some fakes? We may never really know now, but too many monograms makes me suspicious. Since I really only have a passing interest in Kidd's activities I can have fun with what ifs... Like BA said they would look awsome in the man cave!   Grin

I have examined the 'Yunnan' mirror, there is no doubt it is genuine and of the period but! one can get any old mirror/box/chest and carve what you  like on it! with a bit of care you can make it look very authentic, unfortunately those faking the Palmer/Kidd relics didn't have the right knowledge and expertise but to be fair only those with the 'knowledge' would be able to spot a fake. For those who have not seen my earlier post some weeks ago, I repeat, the whole Kidd charts sage is a very clever deception using a real island and period pieces, nobody  will find Kidd's treasure using these charts! - why do you think nothing has ever been found?

I agree CapnKidd, I probably should have stated that better. I am of the opinion that they took authentic items of Kidd's time and added inscriptions as you say. The most believable lies have an element of truth... I believe this happens quite often in the antiquities trade where a famous individual adds a degree of value. Just my take on it. Honestly I would rather be proven wrong....   Wink
