Tony you have been outed as a conman by asking people to invest in you hair brain idea. You have also side step every question asked of you if you wish to be taken serious you need to tell us why you know more then every researcher in the world . Till then I got you pegged as a BS artist.
And I am warning you that we will not put up with your BS like we did last time.

Hi,
Kidds execution was a messy affair.
He himself was drunk (common in those times for those facing the rope).
In fact he had to be hung twice, as on the first occasion the rope snapped.
The only recorded speech he made was a drunken, rambling, warning to other seafarers to avoid his fate.
The night before his execution, he did, however, send a note to the speaker of the house (parliament) claiming that he had ?100,000 worth of concealed "treasure" that he would gladly lead the authorities to if his life was spared.
This was taken into account and considered to be just a "bluff" and his sentence was confirmed (although 8 or so of his shipmates were reprieved).
I've seen copies of "flyers" (little printed accounts of important "news" of the time) in museums.
Again, the only facts mentioned are of the 2 attempts at hanging and the warning speech.

If you really dig deep into the Kidd story it's really just a weak and gullible man being "taken in" by those in power and then "disposed of".
He really wasn't the "Swashbuckling stuff of legend"..... sorry.
The maps are all phoneys (there is more odds of winning the martian lottery than ANY of them being genuine).
All were made for a purpose.... greed not treasure.
And that's what they, and copies, have always been used for..... scams, poorly researched books ..... you name it.

Hello All

Thank You Paul A for the link.

I remember now reading some thing somewhere similar after seeing the website. I kind of feel sorry for Captain Kidd because I think he was used as a scapegoat to avoid political scandal connected to the royal family that was backing the privateering expedition. Quite royally shafted.

And yes the image of swashbuckling pirate of legend is far from the real person from history.

It is always amazing how a legend can alter a real persons persona.

Some thing to remember when studying legendary treasures.

Hardluck

Hi Hardluck

Many thanks for answering. I know that many famous buccaneers had been in London in the year 1701. Any idea what relation had been among them? Davis, Wafer, Dampier and others had a common past. Any idea how they follow the execution of Kidd and other pirates during that time? Did they hide like ordinary criminals or did they help each other? I have read many books, geman and english. The most descripes the situations of the pireates from the view of the author. These from the 19th century romanticly, these from the 17th century as moralic criminal stories and these from the early 20th century mostly as adventure stories. I always miss the facts about socials standarts, politics and religions. And cause i want to write a historical book about this matter, living here in switzerland and not beside of the sources as the british muesuem or others it is really hard to find descriptions that are close to the truth.

So, thanks for any information that may can help me.

p.e.

Oh and thank you Paul. Kidd isn't an important figure in the story i want to tell, but he takes a littel part of it and i want to be correct in the informations i use for the fictional historic book that i plan. There exists a movie about Kidd from the year 1945 in witch Charles Laughton play the role of Kidd. This movie is not so important but i think the words of the speach could be closely near the truth. Did i get this right? Kidd held his speech in the evening before his execution or was it really infront of the rope?

This is the speech he gave before the rope.

My name was Captain Kidd, when I sail'd, when I sail'd, And so wickedly I did, God's laws I did forbid, When I sail'd, when I sail'd. I roam'd from sound to sound, And many a ship I found, And then I sunk or burn'd, When I sail'd. I murder'd William Moore, And laid him in his gore, Not many leagues from shore, When I sail'd. Farewell to young and old, All jolly seamen bold, You're welcome to my gold, For I must die, I must die. Farewell to Lunnon town, The pretty girls all round, No pardon can be found, and I must die, I must die, Farewell, for I must die. Then to eternity, in hideous misery, I must lie, I must lie.

I don't know if this link has been posted before or even the book; however, the information is most valuable concerning pirates in general and specifically Kidd. The book contains complete period documents dating to the trial of Kidd along with much testimony and depositions from direct witnesses.
