Hello All

Thank you all for making this an interesting post.

Anyone thinking about searching for this wreck should try to get acess to tidal records relating to that part of the coast.

Around Burry Holms many even yield results.

Hello Metal Detective

 Welcome

If there is a very low tide tomorrow I try detecting at the extreme low tide mark near a spot called Diles lake.

You can see the location marked on the map I posted.

Good luck and please post us of any finds you make.

Hello All

Sound Metal detective has done his homework on the tides.

Due to sand mining off the coast sand levels have been receding along the Gower coast. that and with a very low tide has possible been the best time ever to get down the sand layer where these coins are deposited.

I had a crack at this many many years ago when sand levels on the beach was too high. Sadly no coins for hardluck. If I wasn't living on the other side of the world I might of considered another try at it. However I am more than happy see some one else have a try.

If any one out there gets lucky.

Just remember old Hardluck  Wink

Actually I'm searching there quite often, whenever time and tide allows Wink Tide tables are widely available so no problem there. Yesterday I chose the Blue Pool Corner area as it is not so often that this beach is completely dry for long. Only lead sinkers came up though. I believe we'll have to wait for a serious storm to have a crack at searching the sands of Rhossilli.
I had no luck so far in that part of Gower coastline but elsewhere did produce some silver which I'm trying to identify here:

Hello Metal detective

Thanks for the interesting post.

And yes I agree with your assessment timing is crucial to be in the right place at the right time and after a huge storm that has lowered the beach levels. Maybe once in hundred years event? Spanish Coins have been claimed to have been found in the bottom of Blue pool.

Thank you for the interesting picture of the crude small cup ingots. It is hard to confirm the origin of the metal ingots. I suspect they were contraband crude silver ingots being smuggled on whatever vessel was wrecked. Most official silver and gold was stamped by Mexico city or Lima mints. But that did not stop a huge amount of smuggling of precious metals as unofficial cargo on official shipments.

Historians claim that twice as much as what was officially shipped from the Americas was smuggled back to Europe.

One way would be to take a small sample and get assay of what other metals are present. Clearly one would suspect an origin from some where in the Americas but some times we can be surprised.

OH I just remembered a picture showing some gold ingots from Asia. You will see a cup Ingots and bottom of the picture. The silver ingot could of traveled on the Manila Galleon route from Mexico to Manila and was used in Asia. The Chinese seemed to favor cup shaped ingots for some reason. I think it was their traditional smelting methods and the type of molds they used. The Spanish used wedge shaped finger ingots weight varied until a certain date when a more standardized system came into use.

Thanks a lot for this photo hardluck Smiley It is an interesting suggestion but since this find was not accidental (I followed a good archive lead) I have strong reasons to suspect Spanish/Portuguese provenance of those ingots. The only question now is how many of them were on this ship and how many are still left to be found Wink Since UK law is very strict on wreck/beach finds I have to wait on Receiver of Wreck decision before I'll be able to take any samples etc. They are obviously nice and historically important find but I don't think very valuable, without any background history to them Undecided

Go Up Go Down

Hi All,
Been off for a while due to working away, had a few trips down to Diles Lake after the dollars but nothing but lead sinkers like metal detective said, I had a go down on Cefn Sidan beach were there is over 180 wrecks along its 7 miles of beach and were i live and came up with a nice silver ring which i found on low tide at approx 12" deep, done some research and have been told by three jewellers that its over 300 years old so, In the next few days i will post a photo here of it, If you recall i did meet up with that chap regarding the Silver dollar wreck and had some very interesting maps of the Gower Coast and details of the Silver Dollar Wreck which he claims is correct as he dived it 15 years ago and made a jib on his boat but then went through a nasty divorce i managed to scan them and print them out, Another interesting point is on the map it states a German U Boat was sunk just off Oxwich Point in WW11, so thats a good one for Hardluck as he said in the past there was no U Boats sunk in that area/?? Im not saying  Hardluck is wrong but is the map right?? as he is normally on the ball. With the winter storms hitting the Gower i will be between Diles Lake and Spaniards Rock with my Explorer SE, will post that photo a.s.p and see if anyone can shed some light on this ring.
                                                                                           Regards to you all
                                                                                                 Phil

Thanks for the update Phil and congratulations on the ring Great I sure would like to see your maps Cool
Regarding the U-Boat of Oxwich Point - according to my information it was sunk on Easter Monday 1940 4 miles SE of Oxwich Point but I'm not sure if it has been found yet.

P.S. Phil, please check your inbox as I've sent you PM.
