Easy. Your camera malfunctioned.

Camera malfunctioned.......hahaha......good one, so much for your "deductive reasoning".

It certainly is more logical than blaming a ghost, mate.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Yeah, let's blame the camera for all the other unphotographed phenomena that has occurred here too. Obviously no sense going into details here. I guess the attitude is understandable, as I would have have been a skeptic before experiencing all these things firsthand.

Gee whiz, mate. All these ghosts surround you but the rest of civilization sees nothing. How can that be?

Easy again. They don't exist. Not in this world, anyway. Perhaps in another place, where the mind is loose.

I've been snapping pix (another casual hobby of mine) for the last 38 years. Started with a Kodak Instamatic, moved on to Nikon and Konica SLRs and point-and-shoot cameras, then to digital cams:2 Sony Mavicas, a few Nikons and a Lumix. Never encountered ghostly artifacts in any photo.

One day a friend freaked out after a holiday in a cool mountain casino resort. Some of the photos taken on that trip had misty ghostly figures in them and he was convinced he was cursed by spirits because he lost money at the casino (I was not surprised at that Grin). Suggested that he have a service center check and clean the optical elements and replace any seals/o-rings if needed. Voila! No more ghosties. Some older cameras can benefit from having a dry cabinet to live in when not in use..and a few packets of silica gel tossed into the camera bag wouldn't hurt.

Yes, very good advice for older cameras and cameras that need maintenance, although this is a new camera that was checked before and after the subject photo. I have no idea what is in the photo, but I fail to see how the camera could be responsible for what is shown in the image.
