Here IdahoJones and csharp

Err no on both accounts but both are very interesting characters that require yours truly to do more research on them  Embarrassed .

The pirate I was thinking of was claimed to have been picked up in the Indian ocean. Unfortunately he chose to sail home with Kidd.

Hi

Hardluck

Yes i vaguely remember this pirate, he has the same name as the island he was picked up on, and the island is still privately owned by the same family.

i will find his name in my documents.

regards

I ran onto this interesting list. It also lists the ships crew names. Link at bottom. Perhaps the gentleman in question is on this list? My guess would be Edward Davis since the others mostly were part of Adventure Galley crew and he is associated with Cocos Island. It's a bit questionable if it's the same Davis since it seems he was sailing about in 1702. Perhaps he convinced the court he was ill used?

My second guess would be James Kelly simply for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

"Onboard the Resolution, captained by Culliford, Keley used the name Sampson Marshall. Kelley, rich with booty from Culliford's cruise, decided to retire (or possibly quarreled with some of the crew and was booted off the ship) upon arrival at Saint Marie in April 1698. After two decades of pirating, he planned to return to England and reunite with his wife and family. He joined William Kidd on his ill-fated return to New England, changed his name to James Gilliam."

Hello All

Idaho Jones and Csharp well done.

It would be of interest to look into the life of James Kelly and Edward Davies. One was hung and the other was released?

James Kelly was an unfortunate passenger of Kidd's return journey from the Indian ocean. Edward Davies had just returned from South America and was caught up in the dragnet of pirates where Kidd was captured.

Ask yourselves what saved Edward Davis while Kidd and Kelly hung for their crimes?

And what archaic term Captain Kidd alluded to in describing where he buried treasure?

Hi

Hardluck

Another forgotten pirate of Kidd if you would like to research is a fellow named William Leeds.

There would be much in researching this person as he was pirate, then became wealthy, then became reformed pirate then became politician.

regards

Hello csharp

Thank you for your comments. It is interesting as I am not familiar with that name.

Hardluck.

Sorry I haven't had a chance to dig much into this. It looks like Davis was lucky enough to have been with crews that stuck to Spanish ships. I would guess that could have saved his skin and I can't think another reason would have allowed his property to be reinstated. He must have been accepted as privateer and even invited to join another expedition after trial or inquiry whichever it was. Wonder if he eventually returned to Cocos for his possible stash?

Kelley was apparently carrying his spoils with him as well so no interest in keeping him alive to find his hoard perhaps.

Hello All

Here is a map that may lead to a great discovery. The map dated 1685 by William Hack and was part of series of maps that saved some buccaneers from being hung for Piracy.
