JC - I haven't a clue as to how many crew/divers the Polly-l has. Diverlynn is a diver for this barge. She visits this forum form time to time. You could probubly google the PollyL and find some info on.

Keith - Two important things I,ve learned thru the years:

"When Gold comes in the front door friendship can go out the back!"

"Be careful who you shake hands with and be sure to count your fingers!"

After doing my own research I found out much about the Polly-L. She is able to blow holes with her 2 blowers which are lowered in the water by the hoist. I think that is very efficient. She also can dredge, and has a sluice system when needed. I like the post setup which can lift her completely out of the water. All in all a very nicely set up barge/ship which can do survey work with its Magnetometer and other equipment. Must be a joy to work on, except when abnormal repairs are needed, but even than, working on a stable non rocking ship should be a lot easier than a rocking and rolling ship.  Being they are off shore a bit further than usual, I gather they are trying to follow the possible trail found in 1995 that the sand dredgers hit on. I wish them lots of luck.

The Polly-L is a jack up boat that is as tall as a 4 story building.

They can raise the entire barge-like vessel a few feet above the sea, or they can go as high as 60 feet ? by lowering three giant legs that formed a tripod with the ship in the middle.

"A giant excavator that looks like a bathtub with two propellers inside was lowered into the water about 200 yards off shore. The propeller wash blows out the sand, creating a bowl that will, hopefully, reveal the shipwreck."

For You Treasure Hunters interested in the 1715 fleet...To get back to where I was hoping to help a few of you guys out there...I've had a lot of experience hunting the treasure of the 1715 Plate fleet off Sebastion , Florida, both under the water and on the beaches.
I'll be glad to share all I know with anyone who may be interested.

Aquanut... always interested in wreck diving, the 1715 and 1733 wrecks... I am also researching the Bahamas.... and any other wrecks... but from afar...I have been reading historical info and books... reading old charts.. and comparing all my research to find a starting point... I plan on moving to Florida from San Diego, Ca when I retire from the navy... I now know there are a lot of bureaucracy and B.S. laws to ... supposedly protecting these sites from people like us...

The trouble with the 1715 fleet, is that anything to do with it is tied up by the Fisher lease, meaning unless you sub lease from them, it is off limits. Now of course if you beach hunt it, there are always some slim possibilities of finding something after a storm. Hunting after a hurricane is a 50 50 shot at being left alone or escorted off the areas by the police, who do not want people out there after a hurricane, I have heard of all kinds of excuses why not, and it is just strange, but that is the best time for a chance at a decent hit. It sometimes depends on if the sand is piled up or pulled out and at what locations. The Polly-L was looking for a missing 1715 ship up north a couple years back, they brought up lots of encrusted iron items, but I guess they weren't from the ship, as they never went back to the location. I guess finding the location of a 1715 ship that is out of the lease areas, might be the best possibility of a in water find, but many have looked for another 1715 ship and not found it. But even if you did, you would lose it to someone like the Fishers who can easily get a lease on a new site, where most others have little chance. If you think you can work a wreck site without being found out, keep dreaming, but don't bet on it.
Aquanut, how long did you dive for the Fishers and in what years? Or do/have you work for a subleaser? Thanks.

Go Up Go Down

Greetings from a newby. I've been following your discussion for a couple of weeks and it's fascinating as well as educational.

I'm going to be driving up the coast next week to Cocoa and I thought I'd like to stop in Sebastian State Park and explore the beaches there. Could you tell me how the leases work as far as a snorkeler finding something? Where do the leases start in reference to the low tide line? Is the question of leases something I don't need to worry about? I'll be bringing a Minelab Excalibur, but I won't be going very far from shore, probably just chest deep.

From all the good info I've found here from you 1715 experts I realize there isn't much chance of finding anything anyway, but I'd like to know what the rules are.

I bought a book at the McClarty museum a couple of years ago that was about the history of the Kip Wagner/Real Eight finds, and it had a map and some pictures showing the various landmarks they identified, such as the Cabin and others that I can't remember now. I lost the book and I was wondering if there is a map online that I could use to revisit the areas they explored back then.

Are there any beaches in the general area that haven't been renourished? I'm going to beach comb all the way from Vero to Cocoa.

One last thing. I looked at the pictures that were posted of Jupiter Inlet, and I was wondering what the little blue squares represent.

Thanks for your patience.  Smiley

If you stay within the tide marks you should be ok.

If your in the water on one of the lease sites your breaking law.
