I find when talking to people replace the word HOLE and use plug, when they want to know about digging ,, we cut a plug in the ground which fits right back in . of that don't work in sand

Heck, sometimes MDing in public can earn you another spot to search.  I did, an elderly lady watched me MD and asked me to search her yard.  I did, and gave her an 1919 Wheat cent that I found.  She thanked me and I thanked her back for letting me detect.

I am a bit sketchy when MDing in the public as well.  I had a kid telling me to stop it when my detector beeped when it went over something.  She yelled for her mom, which ignored her.  That was amusing.

Epi,  simple fix to feeling uncomfortable digging with a hunting knife in parks around children and parents is to change  digging implements.  I've found some real diggers at both Lowes and Home Depot that have a nice relatively sharp edge on one side (which you could make sharper), a good serrated edge on the other, and are shaped well for making plugs (plus most of them have depth guages built in).   Since they are designed to be gardening/weeding tools, there's none of the problems associated with carrying around a hunting knife.

I started 15 years ago to hunt beaches.

In the beginning, I acted just like Wile E. Coyote approaching the RoadRunner, holding his ACME metal detector lol !

People not only stared at me, but would of course asked what I was looking for (funny : they know we are looking for something but...they dunno what !!  Idiot), and, would ,ot believe me when I told them about lost coins, or at least would not believe one could find them in huge quantities.

15 years later, I hunt the wet sand areas amongst swimmers in the summer.

There's nothing wrong with metal detecting !

over winter but i was working on a stainless beach scoop then spent to much time reading forums.

Ha ha, great replies and advice folks.  Really appreciate it.  Enjoy reading how others have felt, especially their first few times out.  I am getting better at not letting it bug me.  Guess I've always been a bit of the "low profile" type, ha ha, so for me anyways, its just gonna have to take some getting used to I suppose.   Smiley

Really enjoy the Hobby though.  I think my hardest part is in a park, always feel like folks will think I am ruining the park... whereas I'm not.  If I go after anything... it's usually on the surface or I will try to stick a screwdriver and go after it that way, ensuring I am not ruining the grass etc... most likely will just take getting used to.  Oh yeah, BTW... that using a screwdriver method in a park, I envy ya'll that can get your items that way - thats a skill for sure... right now I still am lousy at it... hoping practice makes perect.  Lol.

Thanks again so far for all the info.  Fun Hobby for sure.  Never know what the next Blip will bring... cracks me up.  Feels like fishin, looking for the trophy fish... never know.  But when it hits, its a riot!

My problem is that I'm not shy at all and would get more talking done than MD'ing! People don't bite, this might be one of the best things that ever happened to you. Have fun out there!
