im with McIntosh....I always talk to the kids...never know..you might start a spark that last a lifetime.
Besides they never stay long after you dig a couple of trash items. most leave quick. The one that tags
alone for a while might just be your next hunting buddy.

Just go to the Kellyco link or Whites or Garrett and get any kind if "digger". Wear a glove (a cheap bicycle glove" available in a bike store, to prevent blisters). Then you don't have to worry about the size of the blade.
Go to the black toolbar up above and click on "invite" and send the link to your friend. I learned that today from the great people on these forums.
Don't discriminate. Dig everything. That's where the gold and nickels are, otherwise you'll miss them. At night you can't see if the gold is glittering and you may miss some of it. Try equal day and night.
Don't forget. A M/D is a big investment. It's a computer. And it does sophisticated things, like find money and jewelry. Enjoy it for what it's worth. All the on lookers ar just people. Sometimes there's a jerk, but most of them would like to see you find something. If they see you and want to know what it is, just hold up a penny or some coin. You never want them to say that the item "was theirs).

As you can see there are lots of answers here, I am a bit late with mine so let me just say this "GOD made us all different". Even if we are alike in some ways we are different. I have been at it since 68. I have had people walk up and tell me they lost thier wedding ring under that tree over there. I had one guy who asked me to come to his house and help find some flat wear that his child had taken out side from Moms good silver draw. Even wanted to pay me to do it.
Bottom line never dismiss anyone who comes up to you, but don't be bashful either.
Having said that I do like my alone time, most people I do dismiss after a while. I'm a social type so I try not to be to quick about it. You can miss some good leads if you do.
But let me just answer the question of how long will it take to get used to people staring at you? There can be more then a couple of answers as to why they stair, do let them get in your head. Just ignore them.
I can't help but wonder if your embaressed by your hobby? If you are, you may never get over it.
You asked for my two cents and I gave you a nickel. I told you I was social.  Grin

Hmmm, some great answers!  Ya'll rock!   Grin

I think, yes, there may have indeed been some embarassment in the beginning... although I have never liked being the center of attention... always been the kind of "low profile" type... until I get to know folks better... Lol.

Ok, now, having done this now for several weeks into months... I have to say, for me at least... seems once you find a decent thing a time or two... the embarassment goes away!  Having found a decent amount of silver jewelry etc... (no gold yet, sigh) I am really getting over worrying about folks "seeing" me, ha ha.

So, for those that are newer than me, time makes it easier... for me at least.  I now have no probs going to spot when there are folks around... although I do try and keep em at a bit of a distance.  Mainly because I'm still not comfortable with folks seeing me "dig" even though I seem to have gotten much better at keeping the holes real small and do NOT go deep at all in parks or fields.

So, all in all, gets easier as time goes on for me anyways.

Back in the 70's I was at the State Fair.   The ANG had a Ground Radar set up.   In five minutes of tutorial, I was able to hear a car from  a truck, A Motor Cycle from a car.   You just never know what could be a gold coin! Shocked Shocked
