Hi ubodlaj

You should use an object that is 5% the diameter of your coil for example I have a coil 280mm so the object (mild steel) will be 14mm in diameter and the detection distance is in the region of ? the diameter of the coil 14cm so with your coil of 230mm you should detect an object 11.5mm at a distance of 11.5cm these figures will change if you use Teflon coated wire or if you change the inductance and wire type another thing to remember is that this is only for an air test and is only to have an idea about the performance of the machine and is not a rule but if every body did the same test it sure would make things a lot easier for all of us knowing that the person that performed the test in this manner instead of having you using a One Euro coin and the guy in the states using Dollar and me in SA using a One rand coin . I used an M13 nut to do a test on the Surf PI same as yours and I got in the region of 13-15cm  try on yours and let us know what you get.

All the best
Xavier

There u go :Smiley , project finished...all working fine and all problems and constructions problems solved. I will still have to test it for water resistancy, but i think will be no problem.

So where to start.. Tongue
Coil housing i bought at Hays electronics, coil is 20 turns on 23cm diameter of 0,35mm wire.
For underwater housing i used water pipes, so on one side i can still open it and fix smthng or replace parts in case if smthng wrong. Other part i putted in oring and silicon grease and also from inside epoxy. The cables for coil and electricity were also sealed with epoxy.
Battery housing can be opened from both sides- i left that so i can see how good the seals inside the pipes are.

I also modified the circuit so when metal is detected LED diode blinks...for that i used 4 or 5 transistors and starting signal comes from the speaker(problem was led diode didnt glow that much and underwater would not be usefull)...
Speaker was taken from i think it was projector, eh its just a little speaker...i also used epoxy to fill all the area behind, i think it should work underwater without problems, since membrane is made from plastic...well see Grin

The frame i built from aluminium pipes and coper pipes(for the corners--turns)

What else is there to mention...oh hehe for turning the device on i use magnetic switch so the problem with water resistant switches is no issue. I dont have any external potentiometers, because i already set the surfmaster for best performance.

So thats it..if any questions ure welcome.

So thats it..if any questions ure welcome.

Two things come to mind.

The unit needs to have neutral buoyancy do you are not constantly fighting to keep it under water. Some builders use epoxy but since you are a DIY type, I suggest a tube inside filled with water. My first underwater machine was a Garrett i rehoused in a large plastic flashlight. Worked great but needed tons of added material inside to keep it buoyed correctly. At the time, I used chunks of acrylic plastic.

The speaker is facing down. I'd turn that part of the unit upwards so the speaker is facing you. It's noisy out there in ocean surf.

Well, you did ask for comments and suggestions. Your speaker was pictured as being face down. Oops. My bad. It is face up. Sorry.

As to ballast, I wouldn't use lead. Perhaps a plaster casting that would fit inside would work. My detector that built from these plans would pick up a piece of lead from a long distance away. It might "detune" your machine making it less sensitive. As I mentioned in my last reply, I used chunks of plastic to keep any extra metal out of the area. Maybe you could try one of those blue ice packs stuffed inside if there's room. If not, fill a piece of plastic pipe with blue stuff and seal both ends. Drop it inside and see how the buoyancy goes.

Tested today in a barrel, no water leaks, and boyancy is negative already...
Next week ill maybe test it in the lake...starting with 6-10m depth... :Smiley

Thanks to Eugene and everyone else for your efforts on this project. I've been looking for a PI detector for Sniping Gold Nuggets in river bedrock and this seems to be a good candidate for the task. Look forward to seeing some more real world results.

You know you can make a Ferrite rod coil for this to be used as a pin pointer type detector.   One person even used a AM radio antenna that worked. Cheesy

I planned on doing a Sniper type probe to do the same.
